What Is Etruscan Jewelry? The Ancient Goldsmithing Tradition That Inspires My Work
When people first discover my work, one question comes up surprisingly often.
"Why do your rings have those tiny gold beads?"
The short answer is that they're called granulation.
The longer answer begins more than 2,500 years ago with an ancient civilization in central Italy known as the Etruscans.
Their jewelry has fascinated me ever since I first encountered it. Not because it feels ancient, but because it feels timeless. Looking closely at an authentic Etruscan piece, you quickly realize that the beauty doesn't come from large gemstones or elaborate decoration. It comes from extraordinary craftsmanship. Every surface has depth. Every angle reveals another detail. The jewelry rewards you for looking a little closer.
That idea has had a profound influence on the way I design my own work.
I don't want a ring to be interesting only from the top. I want it to reveal something new as it's turned in the light, whether that's a line of granulation, a hidden detail beneath the setting, or the way different surfaces meet one another. To me, that's what makes a piece feel timeless. You don't stop discovering it after the first glance.
Who Were the Etruscans?
The Etruscans flourished in central Italy between approximately the eighth and third centuries BC. They became renowned throughout the Mediterranean for their achievements in engineering, architecture and, above all, goldsmithing.
Their work demonstrated a level of precision that still commands admiration today.
Rather than relying on excess, Etruscan jewelers created richness through texture, proportion and meticulous detail. Many of their finest pieces were decorated with hundreds, sometimes thousands, of tiny spheres of gold arranged into beautifully balanced patterns.
It's no coincidence that these pieces continue to inspire jewelers more than two thousand years later.
Good craftsmanship doesn't become outdated.
Granulation: One of Goldsmithing's Greatest Skills
Those tiny spheres are known as granules.
Each begins as a small piece of gold which, when heated correctly, naturally forms into a near-perfect sphere through surface tension. Every granule is then individually positioned before being permanently fused onto the surface of the jewelry.
The process is painstaking.
Too much heat and the granules lose their shape. Too little and they won't bond. Success depends on experience, patience and an intimate understanding of how gold behaves.
Today there are manufacturing techniques that can imitate the appearance of granulation.
They are quicker.
They are less expensive.
But they don't create the same result.
Traditional granulation creates genuine three-dimensional texture. Every individual sphere catches and reflects light slightly differently, giving the surface a depth and richness that flat textures or cast imitations simply cannot reproduce. The difference isn't just in how the jewelry is made. It's in how it looks, how it feels, and how it rewards close inspection.
A Tradition Shared Across Cultures
Although granulation is most closely associated with the Etruscans, they were not the only civilization to master it.
Ancient goldsmiths throughout the Mediterranean developed extraordinary skill in the technique. Less widely known, however, is that pre-colonial Filipino goldsmiths were also producing remarkable gold jewelry decorated with granulation and intricate wirework centuries before European contact.
Archaeological discoveries, including the Surigao Treasure, reveal a level of craftsmanship that deserves far greater international recognition.
Living and working in the Philippines, I find that connection particularly meaningful.
While my inspiration began with Etruscan jewelry, it is rewarding to know that this country also possesses a rich tradition of exceptional goldsmithing. These techniques are not the heritage of one civilization. They belong to a much broader history of craftsmanship that spans continents and thousands of years.
Why I Continue to Use Granulation
Granulation is not the easiest way to decorate a ring.
It is certainly not the fastest.
If efficiency were the goal, I would choose another method.
I continue to use it because I have never found another decorative technique that creates the same level of detail and depth.
As light moves across a granulated surface, every tiny sphere contributes to the overall character of the piece. The ring becomes visually interesting from every angle rather than relying on a single focal point.
That quality cannot simply be stamped, cast or engraved into a surface.
It has to be built, one granule at a time.
For me, that's worth preserving.
Ancient Craftsmanship, Modern Heirlooms
The rings I make aren't intended to look like museum artifacts.
They're contemporary pieces designed to be worn every day.
But every time I use granulation, I'm reminded that I'm practicing a technique refined by goldsmiths more than two thousand years ago—and one that was also practiced here in the Philippines long before the modern era.
That connection gives my work meaning.
Not because it's old.
Because it reminds us that genuine craftsmanship has always demanded patience, skill and pride in the smallest details.
Those qualities don't belong to the past.
They're just as important today as they've ever been.
